Process Development

About

One of the main reasons to why I found an interest in process development was due to poor implementation and execution of system integration. As a company drastically expands, one of the last things to get updated are the working systems. Without communication and a proper plan to manage the increased workload, the workspace will become unstructured. Employees will implement their own exclusive solutions, creating a barrier between the individual and the company. The established documentation and framework will become invalid, rendering the employee indispensable. This can in turn cause vulnerability for the company, if anything were to happened to the employee.

On this page you will get some insight on my process development philosophy, and understand how I develop tools and solutions.

IBM 3270

It is very difficult and expensive for large corporations to migrate to modern systems and applications, especially if one system powers the entire corporation.

One of the corporations that I worked for still used a version of IBM 3270, a system architecture that is more than 50 years old. Because the system was integrated into everything in the corporation, I decided to learn the built-in scripting system and interoperability. This allowed me to use VBA and the .NET Framework to further connect and automate systems. As a result, I developed the VarDag application which reduced the workload by over 400 hours and paper waste by more than 7,000 sheets per month, saving the corporation over $216,000 a year.

Transport Management System

I was hired by a corporation to develop and integrate a new transport management system. The new system would replace pen and paper, and modernize the entire workflow. By automating and streamlining the work process, the employees gained the opportunity to optimize other areas of the supply chain.

Common wisdom in management science and practice indicates that monotonous work correlates with stagnancy in productivity. It was therefore important to develop a system that would alleviate unnecessary tasks.

I spent some time analysing common work patterns, tools and existing documentation in order to form the optimal foundation for the new system. After four weeks of intensive development and thorough testing, the new transport management system was ready for integration. The new system automated a majority of the work, resulting in a workload reduction by over 120 hours per month.
